Preparing Your Quilt
This guide will help prepare your quilt for quilting. If there are any further questions, feel free to Contact Me.
Quilt Top
Make sure your quilt top has been pressed and all threads cleaned up
Trailing dark thread can really detract from the quilt if they are caught between layers.
It is very important that your quilt top is square.
Check that all seams are sewn securely.
Make sure all borders are straight. Any wavy or uneven borders will be too long for the quilt.
Do not hesitate to call for help applying your borders, I will happily advise you.
Quilt Backing
You should choose a backing that is similar to the thread color being used on the top. I use the same color thread on top and in the bobbin.
Fabrics should be 100% cotton for best results.
Sheets are not appropriate for quilt backings.
Remove all selvages prior to bringing them to the quilt shop.
Backings and battings need to be at least 3 inches larger on ALL sides of the quilt.
If you have a 60” x 60” quilt, you will need to supply backing and batting that is 66” by 66”. This will supply the needed 3” on all sides of the quilt.
Batting can also be purchased for use at the quilt shop.
Make sure the backing is cut square as well. Use a 90 degree ruler to verify.
Press all seams in the backing open prior to bringing it.
Other Important Considerations
Your quilt will be quilted in the condition it is receive and will be as free of puckers, pleats, and tuckes as your piecing will allow.
Quilts with embellishments (i.e. embroidery, appliques, etc.) cannot be machine quilted. Plan to add your embellishments after quilting is complete.
